According to WHO, the primary global goal for administration of COVID-19 booster dose is to reduce the deaths and severity of COVID-19 disease.

The booster dose restores the vaccine effectiveness, which has fallen below with time. Many recent studies shows that the booster dose provides protection against severe COVID-19 symptoms and hence, decrease the chances of hospitalization. This in turn will help to decrease the burden on our healthcare system.

It also will help lower the transmission of COVID virus by renewing the existing immunity and providing a protection against the virus. Subsequently, the chances of mutation and development of a new strain decreases with decrease in transmission of the virus.

The greatest Public Health goal is restoration of social and economic life as soon as possible.

There are various factors considered while proposing a booster to certain sections of the population such as, epidemiologic situation, vaccination coverage, population immunity due to infection-induced immunity, need to maintain an essential workforce. Booster doses are required to maintain the effectiveness of the vaccines against the severe infections. Study done in  Israel had showed rate of  confirmed infection  substantially in the booster group as compared to non-booster group across age group studied

The most imperative reason for COVID-19 vaccination and the booster doses is to help curb the rising mortality rate due to the mutation of the original virus. With proper vaccination and booster doses administration, public health bodies worldwide can at least ensure that the effects of the COVID-19 variants are somewhat controlled.

In the current scenario, the demand of vaccines and booster doses will probably overrule the supply of the said materials. In fact, most developing countries are running behind in vaccinating their citizens due to the limited supplies.

It is thus very important that the public health bodies ensure that the vaccines and booster doses are deployed globally so that no country is left behind. If the nations do not support each other, not only will the virus keep on mutating but the pandemic will be prolonged as well.
